Location

googlemapsThe IP 2009 will be held in Alba Adriatica (Abruzzo, Italy) from 7 to 19 September 2009.

  • The Italian Protezione Civile (civil defence service) has recently asked all the hotels on the Abruzzo coast to continue hosting the families from L'Aquila who still have not be allowed to go back into their homes as a consequence of the earthquake.
  • That is why Hotel Sporting is not able to host all our students for the whole period of the IP. Anyway, Hotel Antares, where students will spend their first week, is located at just 300 metres from Hotel Sporting.
  • The move from Hotel Antares to Hotel Sporting will be made on Saturday 12. Before going to lectures, students will just have to leave all their luggage at the reception. Then the hotel staff will take care of the whole move.
  • Thank you for understading.

How to get there

Alba Adriatica is at about 200 Km to the East of Rome and about 60 Km to the North of Pescara.

The closest airports are:

The IP location can be reached from either

  • Giulianova Train Station (located at about 9 Km from the IP location), which is connected to Rome by ARPA coaches and to Pescara/Ancona by train. From Giulianova Train Station local buses leave for Hotel Antares/Hotel Sporting on Alba Adriatica promenade.
  • Simply ask the driver on your coach from Rome to drop you at the closest stop to Hotel Antares on Alba Adriatica promenade (visit the links below to check if your coach reaches Alba Adriatica).

If you are leaving for Giulianova/Alba Adriatica on Monday 7 (the agreed arrival day) from Rome, you will only need to reach Tiburtina train-bus station. There will be somebody from our staff at Tiburtina bus station (around half an hour before the departure time of your coach) to help you buy the tickets and give you further instructions on how to reach the IP location. After getting off your coach at Giulianova/Alba Adriatica somebody from the staff will still be there to help you reach the IP location. Instead, if you arriving on a different day, please read the instructions below very carefully.

0-3. From Ciampino Airport (Rome) to Tiburtina train station (Rome)

To reach the IP location (Abruzzo) from Ciampino Airport (Rome), you will have to reach "Tiburtina train station" (Stazione Tiburtina in Italian) located at the Eastern side of Rome, where coaches leave for either Giulianova or Alba Adriatica.

  • Get out of the airport and search for either "Cotral" or "Schiaffini" buses.
  • There may be different buses: ask the driver or look at the display on the bus. Your destination is Anagnina (which is the name of the underground stop - Metro in Italian). You can find timetables for Cotral here and for Schiaffini here. Tickets can be bought on the bus (the price is 1.20 EUR).
  • After reaching Anagnina, get off the bus, walk down the steps and enter the underground station (you will see an "M" on the signs).
  • Buy a ticket (1 euro): there are self-service machines or desks.
  • From Anagnina there is only one underground line (line A). Your stop is Termini (the main train station in Rome).
  • After getting off at Termini, you will have to change trains and take underground (Metro) line B, direction Rebibbia (there are a lot of signs indicating "Linea B", "direzione Rebibbia"). Your destination is Tiburtina (only 4 stops).

Outside Tiburtina train station you will find the coach station where buses leave for Giulianova and Alba Adriatica.

The coach service connecting Rome to Giulianova/Alba Adriatica (in Abruzzo) is provided by A.R.P.A. The coaches leave from the bus station "Autostazione Tibus" located at the exit of "Tiburtina train station" (Stazione Tiburtina in Italian).

Please pay attention, because after getting out of Tiburtina train station, you will find local buses (orange buses) on your left, which you don't need to take. Instead, you will find the coach station opposite Tiburtina train station, after crossing two roads with a flyover above you; you might see the indication "Autostazione Tibus".

VERY IMPORTANT: if you are reaching Giulianova/Alba Adriatica on Monday 7 (the agreed arrival day), you don't need to read any further.

Application form

The application for the IP must be made exclusively online. Scholarships are offered to students from the partner institutions.

The deadline is June 30, 2009.

This programme is addressed to students of mathematics, applied mathematics, informatics, computer science, physics, engineering at one of the following levels:

  • Master students
  • PhD students (priority will be given to first year's students)
Students enrolled to a 5-year undergraduate course who are expected to complete their first 3 years of studies by the end of September 2009 are also eligible.

The participation of 30 students from the partner institutions will be supported by the EC Erasmus Programme. In order to apply for a scholarship, students will be asked to certify to be enrolled to one of the partner institutions. This will be asked at a later stage, after the selection procedure has been completed.

The scholarship covers full travel expenses (upon providing us with a copy of the flight ticket, see below), lodging in L'Aquila and a contribution for the daily subsistence.

In order to apply, you must register online and complete the application form. In the application form you will be asked to upload a

  • scanned copy of your passport (saved as pdf).

Moreover, if you apply for a scholarship, you will be asked to upload:

if you are a Maste student:

  • a letter of intent describing your interest in the Intensive Programme (saved as pdf)
  • a letter describing your mathematical background (saved as pdf).

if you are a PhD student:

  • a scanned copy of a recommendation letter from your advisor (saved as pdf).

At a later stage, in case you have been selected to participate with a scholarship, you will be asked to upload an official document certifying your enrollment to a partner University for the present academic year within next May. Finally (still in case you have been selected to participate with scholarship), we shall ask you to upload the pdf version of your flight electronic ticket (or a scanned copy of your flight ticket) to L'Aquila.

In order to be selected to participate with a scholarship, students should get in touch with the Local Coordinator of the corresponding partner institution and have a short interview, so that the Local Coordinator verifies wheather the applicant is well motivated and has the suitable cultural background needed to attend the IP courses.

After the selection has been completed, the students awarded with the scholarship will receive an email with all the instructions for completing the registration procedure and for the participation.

Students selected to participate without fellowship will also receive a message by email.
